Aviation Management Program - details

The program is composed of six modules with a duration of four days. Participants have to prepare themselves for each module by reading books and cases. 

Organization and HR Module

Apart from being educated in the fundamentals of organizing participants will act in a simulation; in this simulation participants bring in their normal way of co-operating in the context of the game. Participants are confronted with their way of acting and the influence it has on joint problem solving and organizational performance.

Furthermore participants will learn about HR (hiring, training, assessing, rewarding, motivating, etc.) and will develop several skills (interviewing, etc.).

Strategy Module

This strategy module will be dedicated to the airline and travel industry
For example: based upon research done by Porter the industry will be analyzed and compared with other industries. The generic strategies (f.e. flagship carriers, no frill airlines) and the role of economies of scale and networks will be discussed. The value chain will be used to concretize the different generic strategies.

Marketing Module

In this module the fundamentals of marketing will be discussed for the airline and travel industry. Specific elements that will be addressed are for example:

  • Revenue management and the game of value pricing
  • Customer Relationship Management and Channel Management
  • The Customer Value Experience
  • Branding

Operations Management

This dedicated module will address for example

  • Flight Operations Management
  • Purchase Management
  • Maintenance Management
  • Route networks
  • Quality Management

The module will place the participants in several of their potential upcoming management roles. Apart from learning the tools and concepts, they will explore how to act as a manager in the context of the maintenance department or procurement teams (f.e. testing new airplanes). 

Finance and Accounting

This module will cover:

  • Cost accounting for airlines (costs per seat per mile; occupancy rates; etc.)
  • Departmental budgeting
  • Investment decisions (lease/purchase; fixed/flexible capacity; risk assessment)
  • Working capital management
  • Financial reporting

Personal Development and Leadership

This module is highly focused on the individual and her/his role as a leader. Its aim is to develop the personal effectiveness of the person in his/her role as a communicator and a leader.
